Joe Fellows wins top award at ‘The Smalls’

All at Ad Hoc Films would like to congratulate collegue and regular collaborator, Joe Fellows, who won The Guardian Film Award, at this years prestigious ‘The Smalls” short film competition.  The brief was to create a film reflecting what London means to you. From personal tales to artistic flourishes, the entries came in by the hundreds but Joe beat them all to the top spot with his film “Primrose Hill”. Joe will see his film screened on the Guardian Travel website and will also be commissioned by Guardian Travel to create a second film. He achieved the smooth tracking shots using a merlin steadicam whilst riding his longboard! Ingenious but don’t try that at home!

Congrats Joe, you talented fellow you!

Movie2Movie review of The Four Year Plan

As the review is in Dutch we had it translated:

Things can change. Football is a capricious business. Queens Park Rangers football club was once a proud London club. A relegation to the Championship, the English second division, and a lot of financial problems leave the future bleak at this traditional club. They are presented with turbulent period in which they will sink or swim. Filmmaker Mat Hodgson dives with his camera behind the scenes of the football world and presents the documentary “The Four Year Plan” as a clear case study that gives the viewer a glimpse into the catacombs of a troubled club.

In 2007, Queens Park Rangers are in a poor situation. Bankruptcy seems inevitable. Up step two billionaires to the gate. Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone, who made their names in Formula 1 and decide to put their hands in their wallets. The contrast between the two businessmen, who bathe in the luxury, and the club, which is situated mainly on a working-class borough, could not be greater. The goal is to succeed in four years in graduating to the Premier League and benefit from its pot of gold. But that seems easier said than done.

While Ecclestone is far in the background hiding, it is specifically Briatore who pulls the strings. It quickly becomes clear that the Italian involves in much but has little patience. During games he is not afraid to meddle and interfere with the team.  When Briatore wants two strikers or a certain player on the field than he ensures that message is subtly conveyed to the dugout. His contact with trainers is also problematic. For him they are all idiots and drunks that are perfectly interchangeable. All these troubles are therefore detrimental to the performance on the field. It does not take long before the fans turn against their Chairman. At one point he demands the names of the fans who jeered him and he threatens to sell the club.

For Mat Hodgson, these events are obviously excellent material to use in his film. He constantly flits between meetings, discussions and match footage. His lively style of splicing this together makes his documentary a winner from beginning to end. It would appear that he was given free rein to document all internal aspects of the club. The Four Year Plan is not exclusively for football fans. Those who want to know how a football club is run will also be richly rewarded.
